HVAC Inspections - Make Sure the Heat and Air Conditioning Works When the Weather Turns Ugly
By Daniel P Elliott
While winter is in full swing throughout the northern states, most major cities, such as Harrisburg, PA or smaller cities like York, PA, are able to effectively deal with the freezing temperatures due to larger maintenance budgets. Those families and the common man without "deep pockets" will most assuredly find it a greater challenge to make ends meet. One aspect of home and equipment maintenance which can not be overlooked is the HVAC system.
Whether the home is outfitted with baseboard heating, radiant heat or the traditional furnace, the equipment should be inspected annually. Hopefully the HVAC system was inspected before the bitter cold of winter arrived on the scene. The reason for this inspection is to help ensure that the heating will be working properly to maintain a moderate comfort level.
Nothing is worse than being stuck in a snowed in house when the furnace or other heat source fails. Interior temperatures can plummet. The two demographics which are at the greatest risk of sustaining serious injury or negative effects from the bitter cold are the elderly and the very young. Every year there are multiple reports of some elderly man or woman who has expired due to hypothermia or freezing. Those individuals with pre-existing health conditions are even more susceptible.
Different sources will cite a large varying of statistics regarding deaths attributed to cold temperatures. The New York Times, in a ten year old article, reported that there are more than 700 deaths every year due to cold weather temperatures. Other reports state that number as being in the thousands.
The point of this writing is not to instill fear, but merely to point out that in many of these cases exposure to the cold can be detrimental. It is also quite possible and realistic for a home owner to prevent this condition in the first place. Most, if not all heating and air conditioning service companies, provide maintenance contracts and residential inspection services with just this in mind.
The problem is most home owners do not anticipate any heating failure. When a furnace or heat pump does break down the home owner will usually expect that a HVAC service company will be able to come out and simply and quickly repair the equipment. The problem is that every part that may be faulty can not possibly be stocked by a heating and air conditioning company. There are simply too many components and models of furnaces and other heating equipment to accommodate. Some parts may need to be ordered. In this case the home owner will need to wait. In the meantime the individual will need to have a backup emergency plan or suffer the consequences.
Many websites provide additional information on the topic of heating, air conditioning and all manner of HVAC systems. One such site worth visiting is http://www.comfortzonepa.com.

Choosing a Home Heating & Air Conditioning System
By Catherine Olivia
There are various types of home heating and air conditioning systems. The type you have in your home is most likely based on the age of your home and the part of the country in which you live. Especially if you buy an older, existing home. Gas and oil furnaces have been around a long time. A furnace draws air through duct systems in the home where it is heated in the furnace and returned back to the home through the duct system.
Gas and oil furnace heated homes generally feel warmer then homes with older electric heat pumps. You'll find electric heat pumps in warmer areas of the country. They were a great idea for use in the south where temps stay generally warm but their use slowly crept up the east coast to areas where they don't work as well due to the colder winter temperatures. Heat pumps work by pulling "warm" air from the outside, warming it and circulating it through the house via use of ducts. Electric baseboard heating is easy to install, but can be very costly to run, especially with the price of electric today. Electric heating doesn't use ductwork like a furnace or heat pump. You can keep each room at a specific temperature as baseboards have individual control.
Some air conditioning systems are incorporated into the heating system, some are not. There are various types of air conditioning systems. The simpler well known ones are air conditioning units such as window air conditioning units, wall mounted air conditioning systems and free standing portable systems. Today most homes have what is called a split-system. The evaporator coil is inside and the cooling system, which contains the condenser and compressor is outside. They are connected by refrigerant lines run between them.
If you have an older home and are considering making an upgrade to your present air conditioning and heating system you will probably notice a savings of up to 40% if you're replacing a unit that is 10 years old. You may actually find if you have an older system that you don't necessarily need the newest top of the line model to get better cooling and heating. Today's systems are so superior to older ones you'll notice a difference even if you buy a newer lower end system. One thing you'll notice immediately is that the compressor is much quieter. You'll also notice the air coming out of the ductwork is much cooler.
Before you make any final decision do your homework. Get facts and a clear understanding of products so that you can ask questions and make an informed decision about a unit. There are many online sites that have valuable information about home heating and air conditioning systems such as Consumer Guide (consumerguide.com), Environmental Protection Agency (epa.gov) and American Council for Energy Efficient Economy (aceee.org). Visit the EnergyStar site (www.energystar.gov) to find out how to pick the right system for your home. Talk to several different professional installers to get information and estimates. Today places like Home Depot and Sears install heating and air conditioning systems. Talk with family and friends who may have had systems recently installed.

Getting the Best Deal on Your Home Heating & Air Conditioning System - How to Save Money
By Jay Boyd
"Cheap" is the sound a bird makes before it drops its gift of love on your head as it flies over.
One of the biggest mistakes the do it yourself homeowner makes when deciding on what brand of heating and cooling system to purchase for their home, is getting caught up in the "Cheap" frenzy. It usually goes something like this:
The homeowner first solicits bids from local HVAC contractors. $8,500 and $9,300 (envision the cartoon character with its eyes popping out of its head as it reads these). After the smelling salts have had time to take effect and the homeowner has gotten over the sticker shock of these bids, a reality sets in, that says "I cannot afford this. Maybe there is a better way". The homeowner then decides to investigate the do-it-yourself model of HVAC home improvement and enters the investigative stage by searching the Internet. Now starts the frenzy. The first discovery is mind boggling, as the homeowner discovers a grand canyon like gap between his local contractor's bid and the prices he is seeing for basically the same and in some cases better equipment on the Internet.
The anger kicks in, and the homeowner goes into full bore investigation. The first system looks great, it has everything that the home owner has been looking for and the savings are enormous. The brand is very reputable, the warranties are reasonable and sound and the vendor has covered all of the important bases such as shipping, returns and support. This would seem like the place to put this to rest, but it usually is not. The do-it-yourself minded homeowner is now on a quest. Can I find this "Cheaper"? He looks again and discovers a brand that he has never heard of, but that brings a lower price tag into the picture. He can purchase this system for $300 less. Holy cow! What else can I find? He searches again, and now finds another brand, and an additional $100 savings. This frenzy almost has no end and can become very frustrating.
This is where the homeowners wallet and good sense part. He forgets that the original quest was to find a solution to the extreme price that he'd received from a local contractor. That is not to say that that local contractors price is out of line with other local contractors. But the reality remains that it is outside of the homeowners budget. So the quest began and a solution was found in the reputable name brand system that he discovered.
The savings were extraordinary, allowing for ample available funds to secure a local competent, licensed technician to finish and certify the installation. If the homeowner was to purchase this equipment and secure local talent, it appears that he will still see a $2500 savings. Wow! That is huge. But this is where the plan often derails. When the "Cheap" frenzy kicks in, and the quest to save more is continued, the do-it-yourself minded homeowner often starts settling for less. He seems to forget the initial large savings and is now tuned into the smaller savings of the unknown equipment. Cheaper isn't always better. Sometimes it's just cheaper.
This phenomenon is sometimes coined as, "swallowing elephants and choking on ants". Disregarding the larger event and making final decisions based on the smaller details. If you find the name brand that makes you comfortable, and the security and support of the vendor is in place, stop the frenzy! Don't choke on the ant.

Reclaimed Flooring - Preserve the Ecosystem
By Garret Lloyd
Flooring is a crucial part of making a house habitable. In today's environment-conscious society, eco-friendly features at home can prove to be an excellent selling point. Installing reclaimed flooring is an inexpensive way to do just that, as well as adding elegance and an old-time charm to your home.
There are dealers who salvage wood from demolition sites, vintage homes, dismantled warehouses, lumber mills and wooden bridges to make a variety of floor coverings. Wood from such old buildings can yield quality boards of impressive sizes. However, the availability of specific wood type depends on the dealer's ability to locate it and therefore, supply can fluctuate. Purchase such wood only from a reputed online source to ensure that you get the best deal.
Why Reclaimed Flooring?
Wood floors have been proven by many doctors as a healthy choice and as a cure for spine and joint pain; as wood is easier on feet and legs. Reclaimed flooring can provide all the benefits of wood, including saving energy and your money on a Heating, Ventilation and Air Condition (HVAC) system.
Over the last few decades, people have realized that natural resources are not inexhaustible, therefore over-exploitation would definitely imperil human survival. With this global environment consciousness, preservation and conservation have become the most important concepts globally. With such concerns in mind, it only logical that more and more homeowners are opting for reclaimed wood for flooring, furniture and other construction purposes.
Reclaimed Flooring: Advantages
Reclaimed flooring has its own set of advantages. It is made from wood that has been logged earlier; therefore it has a tighter grain structure as well as density because of which it is more durable than new wood. Also, this wood possesses visual richness due to its natural weathering. A old piece of wood's character and sheen cannot be duplicated by new wood.
If you want to improve your Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED rating and prove that you too are involved in the green building movement, switch to reclaimed wood. Purchasing from, and getting the wood flooring installed by an online provider is more convenient than going to the market to select wood.
A company which has, till date, lived up to all the expectations of its customers is Cancun Wood Floors, Inc. To know more about this provider, visit www.cancunwood.com
Cancun Wood Floors offers guaranteed quality reclaimed hardwood flooring in California including Los Angeles & Orange County at the lowest prices with the best customer service.

The Benefits of Choosing a Locally Owned HVAC Contractor
By Brian Figlioli
One might think that Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment might be alike everywhere one goes, and that it would all be the same to a technician from Minneapolis as it is to another HVAC technician in Atlanta, GA. The equipment itself may be the same, but the culture and specific needs of the end-users that have to live in the environments maintained by that equipment can be as different as gravlax and gumbo.
There are giant contractors and engineering firms that send crews all around this wide nation to install HVAC and other mechanical systems, then they move on. There are conglomerates that may have outlets in Atlanta, but are managed from places like Baltimore or Chicago. If you dwell in the day-to-day world of corporate America, you know that your culture is affected by who is in the head office and where that office is. You know the frustration of trying to get management in an office a thousand miles away to understand what you are dealing with on the front lines because they see everything through the filter of reports and memos. They decide how budgets are allocated, who is hired and fired, and what the priorities are.
The point is this: Local ownership and management matters. It's not that those fellows in Baltimore or Chicago or anywhere else are evil, nothing like that at all, they are just, well... insulated. Your Atlanta HVAC dealer works in an office you can drive to, which also means that they live in or near Atlanta and know what is important to Atlantans. The people they hire are from here too-they're your neighbors. Your Atlanta HVAC technician knows on a visceral level just what August in Atlanta feels like, and so does the manager that hired that technician.
Picture this: It is the middle of August and your air conditioner goes out. It was installed by Company X out of Chicago, so you call Company X. After being transferred a couple of times you get in touch with an operator that is able to find that your air conditioner was installed less than a year ago and it still covered by their 100% satisfaction guarantee. You are told that an HVAC technician has been dispatched to correct the problem immediately. Right about this time you are feeling relieved that the situation is being handled. The HVAC technician shows up in his shiny white truck with Company X's logo printed on the side and goes to see what the problem is (let's say his name is Joe.) It seems that there was a problem with the way the system was installed, so it is no wonder that it is not working right. Now, Joe is going to have to get approval from person at Company X who is in charge of the warranty work. Person at Company X is on vacation, so the request gets shuffled around. Joe's hands are tied. This is where the "insulated" part comes in...
The people that own and manage your Atlanta HVAC service company are not so well "insulated." They know that you know where they work, that they are your neighbors and they know what life in Atlanta is like. So when they go to hire your Atlanta HVAC technicians, they are going to be sure they have what they need to get the job done. Because they know who they will have to answer to: You.
If you are looking for the best HVAC technicians in Atlanta, then look no further than the qualified folks over at Bardi Heating and Air. They are located in Norcross, GA and have been serving the greater Atlanta area's residential and commercial HVAC needs for decades. Choosing the Right Air Conditioning System
By Dave Kagan
Choosing the right HVAC system is one of the most important financial decisions a family has to make. Investing in the home's heating ventilation and air conditioning system can prove to be costly, and several important factors should be taken into account before an investment.
A good quality and cost-effective HVAC system is the requirement of every household. The HVAC system should be able to keep the home at a comfortable temperature. However, cost is not the only factor which should play a role in purchasing an HVAC system. The efficiency of HVAC Equipment, the quality of indoor air, and the quality of the installation are some of the important factors too.
Factors to be taken into Account when Purchasing an HVAC System
Power Ratings of the System
The power requirements of the system depend on a number of factors. The size of the space to be conditioned is supposed to be taken into account. An undersized air conditioner won't be able to fulfill the requirements of a large space. In case the former is too large, it will cycle on and off too quickly without properly dehumidifying the air.
This would mean you get a house which is either excessively hot or too cold. In addition to that, the units undergo wear and tear and the system fails sooner than it normally should.
Choose an HVAC System that Come with Warranties
Choosing an HVAC system from a recognized brand should be the ideal choice. Go for an option which saves money and provides good quality too. Before purchasing the system go through the validity period of the warranty and the terms and conditions that applies on it.
Choose a Quiet System
Noisy HVAC systems can be extremely irritating. Explore the market carefully and find yourself a system which produces the least noise pollution. A quiet system providing quick cooling or heating o your comfort level should be your top choice.
Proper Installation and Instruction Manuals
A system without proper installation from a quality contractor and usage guides is useless. Systems which come with user-friendly instruction manuals can be repaired and taken care of easily. The guides should include detailed descriptions about maintaining the system and programming the thermostat.
Air Quality Features
Careful selection of as well as Filters, UV Lights, and Bi-Polar Ionization Units is important. These components, apart from other things, ensure good quality indoor air.
What is the Ductwork Like?
The condition of the home's existing ductwork needs to be taken into account too. Examining the ductwork for any holes and splits needs to be done before the installation of system. This is due to the fact that ducts having cracks or holes allow air to escape. They can also reduce the system's efficiency by up to 20 percent.
SEER Rating
The efficiency of an air conditioning system is calculated by Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). A system with a greater efficiency will have a higher SEER rating and therefore more cost-effective. Mostly, older air conditioners have a lower SEER rating than newer ones.
Other factors affecting SEER rating include the space's insulation and the whether or not the ductwork is properly sealed. The standard SEER rating for new air conditioners is 13.
Once you are done choosing the right HVAC, the next step is to find an expert for proper installation of the system. Proper installation determines if the unit is achieving the SEER Rating you paid for, Contractor selection is critical to getting a quality installation.

Types of HVAC Repairs
By Lora Davis
At one time or another, you may need to implement various types of HVAC repairs. The initials "HVAC" stands for Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems. They are the systems that help to keep you comfortable by regulating the air flow and temperature and help to control the climate in the home. HVAC repair can range from something simple that the homeowner can take care of to serious problems that a licensed professional will need to fix. The repairs can include work that will need to be done to your vents, boiler, ductwork, or furnace.
One thing that a homeowner can do is to make sure that the filters are replaced regularly because they can become overly dirty or clogged. This problem can hinder the performance of the HVAC system drastically. If you have a closed internal vent or leaky ductwork, they can also affect the performance of the system but these problems have to be checked out by a professional.
One serious HVAC repair that requires a professional would be the replacement or repair of the furnace or boiler. If you have an older system, you should be aware that they are prone to having problems with the boiler or furnace. When you call a professional to check what is wrong they will use diagnostic software to help them diagnose exactly where the problem is and what the problem is. Sometimes it will take just a replacement part but there are times that it will have to be replaced entirely.
Two other repairs include ductwork and blocked vents, which usually can be repaired by removing the blockage from the vents or replacing the bad parts of the ductwork. These two problems need to be fixed by a licensed professional because if the homeowner tries to fix them more damage can happen and cause more problems. Another HVAC repair is the central thermostat but before you call your repairman you should do some troubleshooting. You should check to see if the batteries in the thermostat need to be changed. You also want to check all the settings and buttons to see if they were not incorrectly set by mistake. If none of these is the problem then you will need to call the HVAC repairman.
Other things that can be done to help prevent having an HVAC repair later is to make sure the insulation was installed correctly and it should also be kept up-to-date to make sure that air and heat are trapped sufficiently in your home. You should also make sure that all windows and doors are sealed completely to keep out the outside air.

Heating and Air New Smart Services
By Dan Fava
The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is an internationally renowned electronics and technology trade show. This year the event took place January 6-9th in Las Vegas Nevada. The show featured many advancements in technology, and a big portion of the show was dedicated to smart homes. Smart home technology focuses on taking existing products and making them "smarter" by connecting them to other devices or networks via Bluetooth or WiFi. While trying to get to sleep one night, Ryan Fant thought about how being able to control his vents would allow him to get to sleep. As he thought about it more, he realized that there would be many more benefits to having smart vents as a part of your HVAC system. He joined forces with Nayeem Hussain, his former classmate at NYU, and the idea took off. As smart vents have hit the market, consider the following benefits to getting them installed in your home:
COST-EFFECTIVENESS
When your HVAC system is working efficiently, you can save a lot of money on your monthly utility bills. Your smart vents allow you to close the ones in rooms that are not in use. As such, you can save as much as 30% off your run time, which can mean big savings for you throughout the year. With these savings, you'll be able to cover the cost of your smart vents within the first year of owning them.
CONVENIENCE
As long as you have an Internet connection in your home, you can control your smart vents. There is a smartphone app that allows you the convenience of controlling your vents from anywhere that you may be. Whether you're comfortably resting in bed or out of town, you can use the app to close or open the vents as you please. All of the information is recorded and maintained in the cloud, so you can access it wherever you are whenever you need it.
ENERGY CONSERVATION
Although the smart vents work best in an over-conditioned house, it can work to help conserve energy according to your home and personal lifestyle. You can increase the effectiveness of your home immediately. By closing 4 vents in your home, you can save up to 30% of the run time, which won't use as much energy to keep your home at your desired temperature. You shouldn't install smart vents in more than one-third of all of your vents, so you won't stress your HVAC system. Throughout the rest of your HVAC system, you should work to keep everything well maintained so it will work as efficiently as possible.
MAINTAIN COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURE
In order to reach your desired temperature in your home, you have a thermostat that allows you to program it to the temperature that you want. Why would you want a single temperature for your entire home? You don't need the entire home to reach the desired temperature if you're not going to be in each room. The smart vents have automatic airflow adjustments. These can sense when a room becomes too hot or too cold. It can also read the exterior weather conditions, so the home temperature can be adjusted to the change in temperatures outside. With the many benefits that you can reap from installing smart vents for your HVAC system, it's worth the time to look into getting them. If you're interested in getting smart vents in your home, contact Budget Plumbing & Rooting to learn about what we can do to help you install them in your home. Even if you choose not to get smart vents, we can help you maintain your system so it will continue to work as efficiently as possible and offer you savings on your utilities.
